NHS Trust Tuffa and Andel to rush new oil tank to hospital.

Airborne Tank! The tank being lifted into position by crane

Tuffa UK has teamed up with environmental specialists, Andel to supply a 90,000 litre oil tank to an NHS Foundation Trust hospital.

Andel specialises in providing environmental services including leak protection, tank inspection with interceptor and drainage cleaning. Most of their work is in the public sector where they have a strong track record dating back over 25 years. Earlier this year, Andel won Building & Facilities News prestigious Environmental Company of the Year award in recognition of their commitment to providing the very best in pollution protection.

New for old

Andel was working with the NHS Foundation Trust on tank inspection at the hospital. Andel’s Senior Project Manager, Paul Harrison told us more: “There were originally three heating tanks on site with one of those existing tanks being re-furbished. One of the recommendations we made to the Facilities Management Company following our inspection, is that the Trust could save money by installing a new replacement tank rather than re-furbishing the existing tank.

Andel worked with the design and development team at Tuffa giving us the available footprint dimensions for the location together with the required capacity. Hospitals require sufficient fuel storage to remain fully operational for a minimum of three days, meaning that a large bulk 90,000 litre fuel tank would be necessary.

Tuffa designed and built the tank, which took 10 weeks to manufacture in our steel workshop. The tank measured 9 metres long by 3.5m wide, with the channel runners and lifting lugs taking it to nearly 4 metres high.  The capacity with the overfill protection valve was approximately 98,000 litres.

It was painted in a silver grey and transported to the hospital in the middle of July before being off-loaded and dropped into position by crane. Andel then remained on-site to complete the pipework and installation with the tank fully operational from the end of July.

Signed, sealed and delivered

Public Sector Partner

Paul Harrison again: “We have worked with Tuffa on several bespoke steel projects in the past. They design and manufacture tanks that meet our clients’ exact specifications and we know the build-quality is good. It is vital for us to have overspill protection and bund capacity to prevent any spillage and impact on the environment.”

Tuffa UK General Manager James Shenton was delighted to be part of the project. “We are accustomed to working with partners in the environmental and construction sector and are proud to be associated with a company with Andel’s reputation for excellence. We received the Constructionline accreditation earlier this year, so our ability to design and build large steel bulk storage tanks makes us an ideal partner for public sector projects,” he added.

The tank installed and operational.
