Tuffa Diesel Tank Helps with the Donkey Work

The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary is a ‘forever home’ for almost 100 donkeys and 26 ponies. All the animals have been previously abandoned, rescued by the sanctuary and are now rehabilitated and cared for by the 50-strong volunteer support team. The donkeys also give back to the community, highlighted in the sanctuary’s motto “It is not just what we do for our donkeys, but what our donkeys do for people.” When they are not relaxing, the donkeys are part-time therapists, travelling across the Isle of Wight (with sojourns to the mainland) to work with Alzheimers patients, Stroke patients and people with a variety of needs.

Doing the Donkey Work

The sanctuary sits in 55 acres of countryside and in many aspects runs like a farm – although for the inhabitants it’s more like a retreat. Each donkey needs a bale of hay per day, barns and paddocks require maintenance, fences need erecting, and the much-esteemed poo collector is in constant use being towed around the farm. With the donkeys in semi-retirement, it’s the sanctuary’s tractor and support vehicles which are doing the donkey work.

The Sanctuary’s Specifications

To make their job easier Nick Painter, the Sanctuary’s Farm Manager, contacted us to enquire about our diesel tanks. After explaining the site requirements and expected diesel usage we recommended a plastic bunded 1,350 litre diesel tank with a 12/24v pump. This capacity would allow the donkey sanctuary to benefit from incremental fuel savings from purchasing 1,000 litres at a time. The 12/24v pump option also means that mains electricity isn’t necessary with the tractor or support vehicles battery powering the pump via cable clips.

Bray-liant Results

With the diesel tank ordered and manufactured we arranged for our partner freight company Diamond Freight to delivery the tank to Portsmouth Harbour where Ferryspeed transported it to the sanctuary. We caught up with David Hayles, the Fundraising Manager, to enquire about his experience with Tuffa Tanks and the impact the new diesel tank will make:

This was our first contact with Tuffa Tanks, and considering we are based on the Isle of Wight, the tank was delivered promptly. The tank enables us to have permanent store for red diesel on site, saving us significant money as we used to be on regular diesel. Tuffa were very professional in advising us about what we needed. The savings enable us to be able to spend more on the donkeys!

Highly recommended.

Without onsite diesel storage, the sanctuary was previously being run on regular diesel supplied by a local garage, a task both inconvenient and costly. However, with the addition of a Tuffa tank David informs us that the donkey sanctuary are now able to purchase red diesel in bulk (rather than white diesel from the forecourt) saving the sanctuary 51p per litre on fuel. With these savings the diesel tank makes a sound investment and will pay for itself after a few fills of the tank. That’s not to mention the considerable savings in time from the convenience dispense fuel on-site in a matter of minutes.
