Who can sign off and certify a fire rated oil tank?

A Tuffa Firepro installation requires an independent sign-off to comply with building regulations. Failure to do so would render an installation incompliant.

There are three options:

  1. Stroma approved persons inspection
  2. Self-certification through a competent person scheme
  3. Certification via a building notice by local authority building control

Option 1: Stroma Building Control

Do not install prior to sign-off. Applications need to be submitted at least 7 working days before installation.

Stroma Application Process

Step 1: Complete Form 1: “Stroma Application Form” and submit it to [email protected] with your tank location photo prior to tank installation.

Step 2: Pay the Stroma application fee of £150.

Step 3: Allow 7 working days from form submission before you install your tank. (If an application has any issues Stroma will contact you within this timeframe).

Step 4: Install your heating oil tank according to our installation instructions.

Step 5: Once installed, complete Form 2: “Stroma Declaration Form” with your installer and submit to [email protected] with your new tank location photo.

Step 6: Allow 4 weeks to receive a certificate of compliance from Stroma Building Control.

No. Tank installations cannot be signed off by Stroma BC retrospectively – The application process must be completed within a minimum of 7 days before the install date commences. Retrospective sign off can only then be done by the local authority building control.

We recommend that a trained heating engineer registered to a competent person scheme installs the tank and heating system.

Option 2: Self-certification through a Competent Persons Scheme

The Competent Persons Scheme was introduced by the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) to enable Competent Persons to self-certify certain types of building work. This means technicians within Competent Persons Schemes such as the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) can fit and certify the oil tank without prior approval from building control. For the installer this means:

  • In the majority of cases, you don’t have to use a local council or approved building inspector to check your work
  • Without the need for building control fees your customers benefit from lower prices

Option 3: Certification via a building notice by local authority building control

Oil tanks, including our integrally fire rated oil tanks, can also be certified by a building control notice with a local council.
